In a 2007 afterword, Chaikin discusses how a scarcity of growth in human spaceflight has compelled exploration-hungry observers to show their curiosity to robot probes. to make certain, the achievements of those remote-controlled explorers were striking and interesting to monitor. As Chaikin wrote, rovers have been exploring Mars, Cassini had arrived at Saturn, and New Horizons was once simply starting its trip to Pluto. yet Chaikin is obvious that in simple terms human spaceflight can motivate humans and ignite their passions within the means Apollo did. In 1967 Gus Grissom stood at the top of the active roster of astronauts, but he had started out as something of an underdog. His first spaceflight, a suborbital Mercury mission in 1961, ended in near-disaster when the hatch of his tiny spacecraft Liberty Bell 7 blew off prematurely after splashdown in the Atlantic. Liberty Bell sank; Grissom narrowly escaped drowning. He maintained it had been a malfunction, that the hatch had blown off by itself, but somehow there had been a lingering skepticism—in the press, at NASA, even among other astronauts.

Scott Carpenter's spaceflight career had also come to a premature end; unlike Glenn, he had no choice. Many at NASA felt he had botched his Mercury mission by wasting precious maneuvering fuel, misa ligning his spacecraft for reentry, and firing his retrorockets late, which caused him to splash down some 250 miles off target. Though no one ever said so publicly, it seemed clear Carpenter would never be assigned to another space mission. By the end of the year, only three of the Original 7 were available to fly, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, and Gordo Cooper.
