1985). Research findings reported in the literature since 1985 thus represent only the tip of the iceberg of possible results; even if no other human subjects participate in any other experiments, refined and improved acoustic analysis could generate important new results into the 21st century. Reports from the Bloomington group are of two types. In the early 1980s, research was undertaken at Indiana University under contract with General Motors Research Laboratories to investigate the feasibility of an ignition interlock system for automobiles based on speech-analysis techniques, preventing ignition if on-board equipment determined from the speech signal that a potential driver was intoxicated.

Both voiced and voiceless stops appeared not to be present, as indicated by lack of a silent portion and plosive spike. The majority of segments were ill-formed or missing, evidence of extreme articulatory laxing. Three types of anomalies could thus be distinguished in this study: (a) those amenable to analysis using the spectrograph, (b) those that resisted instrumental analysis, and (c) those that affected intelligibility. The first type was quite frequent; the latter two, although considered to be more serious deviations, were widely dispersed and intermittent within the corpus.

Research Review II: 1966-1982 (c) speaking rate. Fundamental frequency was measured using a Fundamental Frequency Indicator (see Baken, 1987; Hollien, 1990). Speaking rate was measured as the total time for reading the passage, including pauses and errors. Amplitude was analyzed as the average of amplitude peaks across the reading sample. 10% in the high condition, Sobell et al. reported that most subjects did not achieve the desired peak BACs. Some possible causes of this included individual variability, short duration of peak BAC, and differential adipose tissue density.
